Chocolate Rainbow Cake

My daughter's birthday comes very quickly after Christmas, so its hard to muster up the energy to plan her party, let along her birthday cake. Well, its hard for me. My daughter had a million ideas. This year she turned five and was extremely insistent that I step up and pull all the details together. The party was easy enough (ballerina princess party, of course) but for the cake she wanted a rainbow cake. No problem enough I thought, I have made a couple before. Except, she wanted a chocolate ...

Red Velvet Brain Cake

Sometimes I am reminded that baking is really hard, that you can't take it for granted. A little mistake here, waiting too long or not long enough - heartbreak. I thought I was going to write a sweet little post about a cake for my daughter's school, but this cake had other plans. I started questioning my skills about halfway through and I almost gave up on the whole thing. But I had made a commitment, so I stuck with it. In the end I was happy with the results. So at long last, here we are at the third part of the series that is Lory's cake. Oh what's that, maybe I didn't mention that this was a three part series? My bad. Well it is and it's time to talk about the cake! A really, really big cake, a cake that feeds a crowd with a couple of pieces to spare, a cake with a capital C CAKE!. Let me back up a bit - this story actually begins a year ago Christmas. I know, but bear with me. My Mom took me shopping for my gift – a s...

Decorating with edible flowers and berries

I just recently made a cake and decorated it some pansies and berries and I gotta tell ya - I'm in love. I wanted the cake to reflect my friend with something that was simple but not simplistic, rustic and natural but still delicious. What I didn't expect was that it would also be so easy or look so elegant. The flowers and the berries do most of the work themselves. I was inspired by this beautiful cake at Sugar and Charm: http://sugarandcharm.com/2016/01/pink-velvet-cake-recipe-and-e...
